18. Mr. Colvin

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if she will make a statement on international involvement in the peace process in Northern Ireland. [49035]

Marjorie Mowlam

Apart from the valuable contribution of the team of international chairmen which is well recognised, there was no direct international involvement in the negotiations leading to the Good Friday Agreement. However, the Government are grateful for the international support we have received from the United States, the European Union and many others for our efforts and those of the Irish Government, and all the parties engaged in the Talks to help bring about a lasting peace in Northern Ireland.

We are also grateful for the financial contribution by the European Union and by those countries which contribute to the International Fund for Ireland.

24. Mr. Hanson

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what further steps she intends to take to promote the peace process. [49042]

Marjorie Mowlam

The Government will promote work speedily with the Irish Government and the New Northern Ireland Assembly to make arrangements for the full implementation of the Belfast Agreement which provides the best chance for lasting peace and reconciliation in Northern Ireland.
