To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what sources of information are used in the preparation of the country assessment for Sri Lanka by the Information and Policy Unit of the Immigration and Nationality Directorate, with particular reference to those relating to the human rights situation of the Tamil community; how often that assessment is reviewed; and if he will make a statement. Mr. Mike O'Brien

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply I gave to my hon. Friend the Member for Enfield, Southgate (Mr. Twigg) on 13 May 1998,Official Report, columns 127–28. The Sri Lanka country assessment is fully sourced and draws on information contained in reports produced by Amnesty International, Human Rights Watch Asia, United Nations High Commission for Refugees Centre for Documentation and Research, as well as the United States' Department reports on Human Rights Practices in Sri Lanka. Details of these sources of information are contained in the bibliography which accompanies the assessment.

It is intended to revise and update the assessment regularly at about six monthly intervals.
