HC Deb 10 July 1998 vol 315 cc664-5W
Mr. Flynn

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what proposals he has to reduce the chances of cross-pollination between genetically modified crops and organic crops. [49434]

Mr. Rooker

[holding answer 8 July 1998]: There are no specific requirements under the current legislation controlling the release of genetically modified organisms to consider organic farming when field testing genetically modified crops. However, where needed, release consents have specific measures attached that are designed to limit the cross-pollination of neighbouring crops whether they are organic or not.

I am aware of the concerns raised by organic farmers in connection with the planting of GM crops and I have asked my officials to explore with DETR, the farming community and organic standards representatives how these can be addressed.
