Jackie Ballard

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs, pursuant to the answer of 24 June 1998,Official Report, columns 557–58, prior to 18 May, what mechanisms were used to determine how legislation passed in this session would affect women; what consultation he had with women's organisations; and if he will make a statement. [49096]

Mr. Tony Lloyd

The FCO has introduced three pieces of legislation in the current session: to implement the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the Treaty of Amsterdam and the Ottawa Convention on Landmines. These implement internationally negotiated treaties in the United Kingdom.

Women's groups were not consulted in the preparation of the UK legislation.
