To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will list the prisons where alcohol has been consumed by inmates in the past three years. [24046]

There are no centrally compiled records of where alcohol has been consumed by inmates in the last three years. However, since the beginning of 1997, records have been kept of prisoners charged and found guilty under the new Prison Rule concerning the consumption of alcohol. The total for 1997 was 80 proven adjudications, including those for aiding and/or attempting the principal offence.
