§ Mr. SpellarUS Department of Defence projections for the Short Take Off, Vertical Landing variant of the Joint Strike Fighter include a maximum offensive payload in excess of 15,700 lbs, a range of at least 550 miles and a unit production cost of $35 million (£21.6 million) at 1994 prices. Comparable figures for the Sea Harrier F/A2 are 5,000 lbs, 300 miles and £14.5 million.
