§ Mr. PaiceTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what assessment he has made of the impact on the international competitiveness of the United Kingdom poultry meat industry of the ban on the use of mammalian meat and bone meal in poultry rations in the United Kingdom. [20572]
95W
§ Mr. Rooker[holding answer 12 December 1997]: The ban on feeding mammalian meat and bone meal to all farmed livestock was introduced in 1996 by the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (Amendment) Order 1996. An assessment was made, prior to the legislation being introduced, on how, in economic terms, the ban would affect the agriculture industry. It was estimated that the costs of feed for the egg laying flock would increase by about £3 per tonne and by around £4–£5 per tonne for broilers.
