To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what is the projected shortfall for(a) 1997–98 and (b) 1998–99 for (i) hospital doctors, (ii) general practitioners and (iii) nurses. [21358]

[holding answer 18 December 1997]: The information requested is not collected centrally although vacancies are monitored on an annual basis. We are aware of recruitment difficulties in certain specialties and in particular localities.
