To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the total female prison population, by category and in total, on 1 January for each of the last 10 years; what is the current female prison population, by category and in total; and what is the projected female prison population for 1 January 1998. [holding answer 18 December 1997]: The available information for the female prison population is for 31 December each year and is given in the table. The breakdown as at 30 November 1997 is also included in the table. The number of females in prison is expected to be 2,740 on 31 December 1997 (570 remand, 2,150 sentenced and 20 non-criminals).
