To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, pursuant to his answer of 24 November 1997,Official Report, column 372, what percentage of European Funds under objective 5B was spent in the less-favoured areas of the North of England in (a) 1993, (b) 1994, (c) 1995 and (d) 1996; and what is the date when this funding will finish. The objective 5B funding allocated to the Northern Uplands programme, which should operate from 1994 to the end of 1999, is £84 million. However, since the European Commission did not approve the programme until December 1994, no funds were spent during that year. The amount spent under the Northern Uplands programme in 1995 and 1996 is as follows:

Year Structural funds spent (£ million) Percentage of total allocation
1995 2.07 2.46
1996 8.34 10.07
Total 12.53
