HC Deb 12 January 1998 vol 304 c54W
Dr. Harris

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many serious incident forms were completed in Campsfield House Detention Centre during(a) 1993, (b) 1994, (c) 1995 and (d) 1996. [21345]

Mr. Mike O'Brien

[holding answer 19 December 1997]: Group Four (Total Security) Ltd. staff employed at Campsfield House detention centre routinely submit incident reports to their site managers about any event which affects the running of the centre. These reports cover incidents ranging in seriousness from the minor to the more important. The reports are copied to Immigration Service staff on site, and those which are of an urgent or serious nature receive immediate attention.

The centre opened on 29 November 1993. Accurate statistics relating to incident reports were not kept in the form requested before 1995.

In 1995, there were a total of 592 reports submitted, and in 1996 the total was 322. Records relating to the reports do not at present differentiate between the relative seriousness of the incidents to which they refer. It is expected that the report submitted by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons, following his unannounced short inspection of Campsfield House conducted in October 1997, will recommend that such a distinction should in future be made. The report will be published shortly.
