To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what estimate he has made of the cost of his welfare-to-work proposals in each of the next five years. [29908]

The current estimate of the cost of the Department for Education and Employment's Welfare to Work proposals is for the financial year ending April 1998; £92 million, in 1998 to 1999; £762 million, in 1999 to 2000; £775 million, in 2000 to 2001; £752 million and £751 million in 2001 to 2002.

Actual provision for any particular year will be decided in the light of the level of unemployment and experience of the programmes.
