HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 cc111-2W
Mr. Don Foster

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list the total expenditure on the salaries and other emoluments of the chief executives and the chairmen of all non-departmental public bodies sponsored by his Department, for the financial year 1996–97. [30819]

Dr. Howells

The Department sponsored fifteen executive non-departmental public bodies in 1996–97. Using the spot date of 1 September 1996 for the salaries and other emoluments of Chairmen, the Cabinet Office publication "Public Bodies 1996" shows expenditure of £333,676. The salaries and other emoluments of chief executives for that financial year totalled £1,206,202.

Mr. Don Foster

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list the names, current salaries and other emoluments of the (i) Chief Executive and (ii) Chairman of the(a) National Council for Vocational Qualifications, (b) National Council for Education Technology, (c) Centre for Information on Language Teaching and Research, (d) Education Assets Board, (e) School Curriculum and Assessment Authority, (f) Further Education Funding Council, (g) Higher Education Funding Council for England, (h) Funding Agency for Schools, (i) Teacher Training Agency and (j) Office for Standards in Education. [30818]

Dr. Howells

The names of the chief executives and the names and current salaries of the chairmen of the non-departmental bodies requested are as follows. Total costs of the salaries and other emoluments of chief executives for the current financial year will not become available until the year end.

Both the National Council for Vocational Qualifications and the School Curriculum and Assessment Authority closed in October 1997. They were replaced by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. The names of its chief executive and chairman are as listed. The Office for Standards in Education is a Government Department in its own right; questions relating to Ofsted's running costs and other expenditure should be addressed directly to Her Majesty's Chief Inspector, Mr. Chris Woodhead. I have asked him to write to the hon. Member and I will place a copy of his reply in the Library.
