HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 cc68-9W
Mr. Öpik

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what measures she is taking to establish equality of opportunity in the RUC in terms of sexual orientation; and if she will make a statement.[28952]

Mr. Ingram

The RUC's Community Affairs and Training Branches have been liaising with the Northern Ireland Gay Rights Association, members of which facilitate training sessions as part of the community awareness training for new recruits.

The RUC Equal Opportunities Unit includes sexual orientation in its briefings.

Mr. Öpik

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland when she expects the RUC's working party on the implications of sexual orientation in the RUC to report its work; and if she will make a statement. [28950]

Mr. Ingram

It is expected that the RUC's working party dealing with issues relating to sexual orientation will report during 1998.

A final decision regarding the release of the working party findings will be made after completion of the final report and in consultation with senior officers.

Mr. Öpik

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland if the equal opportunities policy statement of the RUC contains an explicit reference to sexual orientation; and if she will make a statement.[28951]

Mr. Ingram

The current RUC policy statement regarding equal opportunities does not contain a reference to sexual orientation. However, this is one of the issues which the new working party will consider as part of its brief.
