HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 c64W
Mr. Maginnis

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland how many(a) off-duty members and (b) retired members of the Ulster Defence Regiment/Royal Irish Regiment have been murdered by terrorists since 1 April 1970; and what account she will take of these statistics in respect of personal protection weapons in her review of the Firearms (NI) Order 1981. [22775]

Mr. Ingram

Since 1 April 1970, 159 off-duty members and 53 retired members of the UDR/RIR have died as a result of the security situation.

The Secretary of State is fully aware of the history of terrorist attacks on members of the security forces. She has taken full account of this in her review of the Firearms (Northern Ireland) Order 1981, which included consideration of handgun controls.
