To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security if she will make a statement on the Government's plans for pension sharing. [29105]

Mr. Denham

Pension sharing will allow for fairer overall financial settlements on divorce. Our Manifesto committed us to introducing pension sharing for divorcing couples and we aim to do so from April 2000. We are working through the detailed issues and implementation arrangements with a panel of representatives of the pensions industry, family lawyers and others, and plan to publish draft legislation for consultation during this Parliamentary session. This is an important first step in the modernisation of the pension system to enable more people, mainly women, to secure an adequate income in retirement.
