HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 c44W
Mr. Bradshaw

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will estimate the cost to Devon and Cornwall police of recent operations involving protests by farmers. [30287]

Mr. Michael

The decision as to how resources are used within a police force area is a matter for the Chief Constable. The Chief Constable must deploy resources according to operational priorities and objectives, whilst trying to take account of local views whenever possible. Every force will, from time to time, face unexpected demands on its resources, such as major inquiries, sports events, pop concerts or demonstrations. Protests by farmers fall within this category.
