HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 c31W
Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what guidelines exist for the purchase of furniture in embassies and high commissions overseas; whether they include price ranges; and whether there is specific guidance on the purchase of beds. [30233]

Mr. Fatchett

Posts overseas are provided with written guidance on purchasing procedures, based on best practice, as well as illustrated catalogues which cover ranges of suitable furniture and other products meeting British Standards. The catalogues are accompanied by a price list, which is based on contracts let competitively and negotiated centrally by the Department. Beds are included in the catalogues. The only specific guidance on purchasing of beds relates to safety standards for bunk beds and children's cots. Posts can opt to purchase through the Departmental Procurement Unit, or locally, using the price list as a benchmark for local products.
