HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 cc11-2W
Mr. Blizzard

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many people currently hold driving licences in the United Kingdom; and what estimate he has made of the number of people eligible to hold a driving licence. [29810]

Ms Glenda Jackson

The number of car licence holders in Great Britain is currently estimated to be 33.1 million, including 3 million with provisional licences. In addition, 0.2 million people are estimated to hold a full licence to drive a motorcycle or moped. Data are not available for Northern Ireland.

The number of people aged 17 plus resident in Great Britain is estimated to be 44.7 million. Some of these will not be eligible to drive on medical grounds. There are no records of those who have passed their driving test, but do not currently hold a licence.
