HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 c17W
Mr. Oaten

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if the proposed Public Service Vehicle Accessibility Regulations will include provisions relating to visual information inside and outside buses and coaches to ensure that deaf and hard of hearing people can travel in safety and without unreasonable difficulty. [30285]

Ms Glenda Jackson

On 19 December 1997 we published our consultation on proposals for buses and coaches under the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) 1995. Copies of that document have been placed in the House Library.

The consultation document recognises the importance of visual information and proposes that in the main the subject will be covered through the guidance based on established good practice. We will look again at this and the wide range of other issues covered in the consultation document in the light of comments received both from the industry and from disabled people, particularly on whether there are demonstrable issues of safety.
