HC Deb 23 February 1998 vol 307 cc23-4W
Mr. Garnier

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what is his Department's policy on the use of canals and navigable rivers for the carrying of freight traffic; and if he will make a statement. [30686]

Angela Eagle

The Government are committed to encouraging the use of water for carrying freight as an alternative to road transport where this is a practical and economic option. Freight Facilities Grants are also available to support the transfer of freight from roads to inland waterways or rail. The Department is considering the scope for encouraging greater use of inland waterways and estuarial rivers as part of the development of an integrated transport strategy. The White Paper on the strategy, setting out a strategic framework for sustainable transport policy, will be published in the Spring.

Mr. Garnier

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what are the average(a) construction and (b) maintenance costs for a mile of (i) canal, (ii) road and (iii) railway. [30691]
