§ Mr. SoamesTo ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what steps he is taking to encourage farmers' markets. [28487]
§ Mr. Morley[holding answer 9 February 1998]The Department supports the principle of farmers markets as they can offer consumers in inner cities and other urban areas the opportunity to buy fresh local produce direct from farmers and other small food producers.
The actual development of more of these markets is dependent on local authorities and local initiatives. Local authorities in particular need to use the market franchise rights sensibly with regard to the needs of local business to help this concept flourish.
