HC Deb 17 February 1998 vol 306 cc553-4W
Mr. Peter Bottomley

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will estimate the(a) direct and (b) indirect effects of random breath testing on death and injury from drink driving. [28822]

Ms Glenda Jackson

I have been asked to reply.

It would not be possible to make such estimates since the effect of random breath testing would depend on the precise nature of the testing regime and the extent of enforcement.

The potential for improving enforcement to reduce deaths and injuries from drink driving is discussed in the consultation document Combating Drink Driving: Next Steps issued by my Department on 2 February.
