HC Deb 17 February 1998 vol 306 c611W
Mr. Duncan Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what description is used by his Department to identify the allowance to those aged under-25 years who participate in an education, an environment task force or a voluntary sector option of the New Deal; and what statutory basis governs this allowance. [30042]

Mr. Andrew Smith

Young people participating in the Full-Time Education and Training option of the New Deal for 18–24 year olds will receive a training allowance; those in the Voluntary Sector or Environment Task Force option may receive either a training allowance or a wage paid by the organisation for which they are working. Training Allowances are payable under Section 2 of the Employment and Training Act 1973.

Mr. Duncan Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what is the source of funding for the allowance for the under-26 year olds participating in an education, an environment task force or a voluntary sector option of the New Deal. [30044]

Mr. Andrew Smith

The New Deal for 18–24 year olds will be financed from the Windfall Levy on the excess profits of the private utilities.
