I am replying to your Question to the Secretary of State for Defence about the Ministry of Defence Police, on behalf of the Chief Constable/Chief Executive of the Ministry of Defence (MDP) Agency, as this falls into his area of responsibility. The Chief Constable/Chief Executive is away from the office at present.The MDP are based at 109 locations, where there is a requirement for their services, costing a total of £149,256 million per annum. I am withholding the list of locations in accordance with exemption 1, 'information whose disclosure would harm national security or defence', of the Code of Practice on Access to Government Information. I am also withholding details of the annual cost of the MDP at each location under both exemptions 1 and 13, 'information including commercial confidences, trade secrets whose unwarranted disclosure would harm the competitive position of a third party', of the Code of Practice.The budget and costs of the MDP are however included within the Annual Report of the Chief Constable. I attach a copy of the relevant pages from the 1996–97 report. A complete copy of the Annual Report is held in the Library of the House of Commons.
