The figures are our latest estimates and are based on information drawn from NATO sources. They update the provisional figures published in October 1997 in the MOD Performance Report 1996/97 (CM 3781).

The figures have been calculated using 1996 average market exchange rates, which do not necessarily reflect the relative purchasing power of individual currencies. They are therefore only a guide to comparative defence effort.

For the UK, the defence budget in the financial year 1996–97 amounted to 3.0 per cent. of GDP; and in 1997–98 and 1998–99 is estimated to amount to 2.7 per cent. of GDP in both years.
