HC Deb 12 February 1998 vol 306 cc377-8W
19. Ms Julie Morgan

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what proposals he has to use the revenues accruing from the windfall tax. [27220]

Ms Blears

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will make a statement on his policy on spending the windfall levy. [27237]

Mr. Gordon Brown

The receipts of the Windfall Tax are being used not only to provide new work and training opportunities for young people, the long-term unemployed, lone parents and persons who are sick and disabled who want the right to work, but also to fund £1.2 billion of capital expenditure for schools, and is contributing to the development of a National Child Care Strategy. I can tell the House that £2.6 billion of the sum has already been paid by the utilities.

Mr. Ainger

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much will be raised in the present financial year from the windfall levy. [27215]

Mr. Geoffrey Robinson

The windfall tax is expected to raise some £5.2 billion in total, payable in two equal instalments. The payments made to date are fully in line with our forecast of some £2.6 billion this financial year.
