Mr. Hancock

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions (1) what assessment he has made of the impact of each type of treatment of waste water currently undertaken in the UK on bathing water quality; [28708]

(2) what assessment he has made of the advantages of the use of ultra-violet treatment of sewage in waste water treatment facilities; [28842]

(3) what is the Government's policy on the inclusion of ultra-violet treatment of sewage in waste water treatment facilities. [28843]

Angela Eagle

Bathing water quality monitoring shows that, depending on local circumstances, the required water quality standards can be met by a wide range of treatment methods and outfall arrangements. The approach to treatment will vary accordingly and with the requirements of the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive. This is a matter, in the first instance, for the discharger and the environmental regulator.

On the issue of the advantages of ultra-violet treatment of sewage effluent, 1 refer the hon. Member to the answer I gave him on 22 January 1998, Official Report, column 613.
