§ Mr. OatenTo ask the Secretary of State for Health how many patients treated by the NHS in the last three years for traumatic brain injury were(a) in permanent in-patient care, (b) receiving day care and (c) cared for by primary care teams in the community. [24278]
§ Mr. Boateng[holding answer 21 January 1998]: There were an estimated 66,600 in-patient episodes of care with a primary diagnosis of traumatic brain injury in England in 1995–96 compared with an estimated 70,000 in 1994–95 and 73,300 in 1993–94. The same person may be counted more than once if they have more than one episode of care.
A revised international statistical classification of diseases and related health problems (ICD10) became effective from 1 April 1995 and several thousand new classification codes were introduced. It is therefore not always possible to provide an exact equivalent match between an ICD10 code and the former ICD9 classification when a time series is required.
The information available is shown in the table and is based on finished consultant episodes, which represent the number of episodes of care under individual consultants.
362WThere is no separate information for those receiving permanent in-patient care, day care or those cared for by primary care teams in the community.
