HC Deb 12 February 1998 vol 306 c380W
31. Ann Clwyd

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what estimate he has made of the extent of revenue lost through tax evasion in the last year for which figures are available. [27232]

Mr. Gordon Brown

No such estimate has been made. There is no generally accepted method of producing a reliable estimate. But during the fiscal year 1996–97, Inland Revenue investigation and compliance work brought approximately £1.5 billion additional tax into charge.
