HC Deb 12 February 1998 vol 306 c282W
Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what mechanisms he has put in place to ensure the Government's objective of promoting sustainable development is reflected in the outcome of the comprehensive spending reviews for his Department. [25908]

Dr. Howells

The DfEE Departmental Spending Review is looking at all areas of the Department's activities and expenditure, many of which contribute to sustainable development objectives including improving economic prosperity and ensuring that economic and environmental benefits are available to everyone. The Government's New Deal, including the Environmental Task Force, is a clear example of taking sustainable development and environmental concerns into account in the formulation of policy. However, no specific mechanism has been put in place to consider environmental matters in isolation.
