HC Deb 12 February 1998 vol 306 c357W
Ms Stuart

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what evidence he has assessed on the use of Nytol in conjunction with Ecstasy; and if he will make Nytol a prescription only drug. [28499]

Ms Jowell

The Department has not received any reports of the use of Nytol, a medicine containing diphenhydramine for temporary sleep disturbance, in conjunction with Ecstasy.

Medicines are restricted to prescription control if they are frequently, and to a very wide extent, used incorrectly, and as a result are likely to present a direct or indirect danger to human health. The Medicines Control Agency keeps the safety of all medicines under regular review and, wherever necessary, takes appropriate action to safeguard public health on the basis of new information. There is at present, no evidence to justify making Nytol a prescription only medicine.
