For the period April 1997 to December 1997, the average cost per week for keeping a prisoner in a dispersal prison was £677; a category B, category C and local prison was £337; an open prison was £291; and a young offender institution was £346.

These figures are net current expenditure and exclude headquarters costs. These will be brought together at the end of the financial year. Headquarters costs will be assimilated at the end of the financial year.
