asked Her Majesty's Government:

What plans they are proposing to restructure the Scottish fanning industry, and whether they plan to do so in advance of any change which may be imposed on other member states of the European Union. [HL349]

As was made clear in their statement on 22 December, the Government intend to consult the industry on the restructuring required to improve its economic sustainability. I have met the National Farmers' Union of Scotland on three occasions already to discuss these matters, both in the short term and in the context of the forthcoming changes to the CAP which will be set in train by the Agenda 2000 process.
