HC Deb 06 February 1998 vol 305 c814W
Mr. Steinberg

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what plans she has to prohibit discrimination in(a) employment and (b) other fields on the grounds of age. [26273]

Mr. Andrew Smith

I have been asked to reply.

The Government deplore unjustified age discrimination and are committed to ensuring that all people are treated fairly, whatever their age. The Government are actively considering how best to tackle issues affecting older people and, at this stage, have no plans to legislate against age discrimination. However, I plan to consult on developing an effective Code of Practice on age discrimination in employment to promote fair recruitment and selection practices. This Department does not have responsibility for the second part of this question.
