HC Deb 04 February 1998 vol 305 c645W
Mr. Stinchcombe

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will list the percentage of new housing which was built on brown-field sites in each year since May 1979. [26762]

Mr. Raynsford

There is no specific definition of brown-field land but it is usually taken to mean land previously developed for urban uses. These uses include residential, transport and utilities, industry and commerce, community services, previously developed vacant land and derelict land. The table gives estimates for England of the proportion of land for new housing that was previously developed for urban uses, for each year from 1985 (the earliest available) to 1995. The average figure for the period was 42 per cent.

Percentage of land for new housing that was previously developed for urban uses: England
Year Percentage of land area
1985 38
1986 37
1987 36
1988 40
1989 42
1990 43
1991 44
1992 47
1993 48
1994 45
1995 50
