HC Deb 04 February 1998 vol 305 c688W
Sir Teddy Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment what contribution his Department has made to the formulation of schools packs distributed by the European Commission in the United Kingdom; and what discussions he has held with the European Commission on the issue. [27369]

Dr. Howells

As far as we are aware, the European Commission has not distributed any packs to schools in the United Kingdom.

The Department for Education and Employment, however, together with the other education departments in the UK, commissioned the "Partners in Europe" pack from the Central Bureau for Educational Visits and Exchanges and the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority to mark the UK's Presidency of the European Union. This was in response to a request from teachers to update the material already in existence about the European dimension in the curriculum.

The European Commission's office in London was invited to place an information leaflet in the pack, which it did, but the Commission was not specifically consulted about the purpose or contents of the pack.
