HC Deb 04 February 1998 vol 305 cc652-3W
Dr. Marek

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will commission research into detecting impairment in drivers other than impairment caused by the presence of substances taken by the driver. [27351]

Ms Glenda Jackson

Driver fatigue is the main cause of impairment other than that caused by substances taken by the driver.

The Department has a continuing programme of research into driver fatigue which is seeking to determine the best counter measures to tiredness, so that drivers have the best advice on how to minimise the risk due to fatigue.

A full list of road safety research is published annually. Copies are available in the Library.
