HC Deb 04 February 1998 vol 305 c667W
Mr. Tredinnick

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what assessment she has made of the impact on global free trade agreements of the proposed new restrictions on the retail sale of vitamin B6; and if she will make a statement. [26358]

Mr. Rooker

I have been asked to reply.

The regulations required to implement the proposed controls on dietary supplements containing vitamin B6 will be the subject of consultation with interested parties. Nevertheless, the Government consider that the proposals are based on sound scientific principles, are non-discriminatory, and are therefore fully consistent with World Trade Organisation rules.

Mr. Tredinnick

To ask the President of the Board of Trade what assessment she has made of the potential impact on global free trade agreements of the proposed new European Directive on dietary supplements; and if she will make a statement. [26359]

Mr. Rooker

I have been asked to reply.

The European Commission has issued a discussion document on the possible harmonisation of controls on dietary supplements but has made no proposal for a new Directive on this subject.

If the Commission were to make a formal proposal, the Government will wish to ensure that any measures adopted respect the EU' s obligations under World Trade Organisation rules.
