HC Deb 02 February 1998 vol 305 cc492-3W
Mr. Welsh

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what criteria will be used to determine which applicants to courses in nursing, midwifery and the professions allied to medicine will be successful in receiving maintenance bursaries. [26558]

Mr. Galbraith

[holding answer 30 January 1998]: Applicants gaining a place on courses in nursing, midwifery and the professions allied to medicine will be eligible for maintenance bursaries. I expect that the total number of places available will remain at around current levels. Such bursaries for students undertaking degree courses in nursing, midwifery and the professions allied to medicine will be means-tested.

Mr. Welsh

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what will be the amount of maintenance bursary for nursing, midwifery and the professions allied to medicine students. [26559]

Mr. Galbraith

[holding answer 30 January 1998]: Students undertaking full-time Nursery and Midwifery diploma courses will continue to be offered non-means tested bursaries as at present.

Students undertaking degree nursing, midwifery and professions allied to medicine courses will have access to means-tested bursaries.

Standard bursary rates for Scottish domiciled nursing and midwifery degree students, and professions allied to medicine students in academic year 1998–99 will be:

£
Students living in the parental home 1,325
Students living outwith the parental home 1,735

Such students will also be entitled to apply for a student loan.

Mr. Welsh

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what the funding arrangements will be for student nurses qualified with HND/RN who wish to continue directly on to full-time degree study. [26561]

Mr. Galbraith

[holding answer 30 January 1998]: It is not possible to qualify as a nurse with a Higher National Diploma/Registered Nurse.

Students with a Diploma in Higher Education in Nursing or Registered Nurse or Midwife who progress to a full-time degree may be given credit for their existing qualification by the institution offering the degree. Their eligibility for student support arrangements for that qualification would be on the same basis as others taking the course.
