HC Deb 02 February 1998 vol 305 cc471-2W
Mr. Mullin

To ask the Secretary of State for International Development if she will give details of (a) trade preference agreements, (b) debt relief and (c) aid currently being made available by Her Majesty's Government to (i) Trinidad and Tobago, (ii) Jamaica and (iii) Belize. [26563]

Clare Short

Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica and Belize are eligible for trade preferences from the European Union under the Lomé Convention. No aid debt relief is currently being made available to any of the three countries. Total UK aid for 1996–97 was £278,000 for Trinidad and Tobago, £9,673,000 for Jamaica and £7,666,000 for Belize. We are currently considering whether debt relief should be extended to Jamaica and Belize under the Commonwealth Debt initiative.
