HC Deb 16 December 1998 vol 322 cc572-3W
Mr. Peter Ainsworth

To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport how much money has been spent to date by the UK Sports Institute. [62778]

Mr. Chris Smith

[holding answer 7 December 1998]: Sheffield is working closely with the UK and English Sports Councils to work up a successful application for Lottery funding. To date a total of £825,000 has been received from the Lottery Sports Fund by Phoenix Sports Limited, the company formed by the Sheffield Consortium which won the bid, to allow development work to progress. I have asked the Sports Councils to confirm by the end of December the extent and certainty of the matching funding put in place by Phoenix to take the project forward, to continue to exercise the closest control over payments while the project brief is developed, and to report on the final specification for the project in the light of their consultations with the sports which will use it.
