Mr. Chaytor

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Employment if he will list the administrative costs, as a percentage of the total budget, for(a) the Higher Education Funding Council, and (b) the Further Education Funding Council; and what is the national average for training and enterprise councils. The information that my hon. Friend has requested is listed below. All figures relate to the 1997–98 financial year, the last for which we have complete figures:

  • Higher Education Funding Council for England 0.29 per cent.
  • Further Education Funding Council 0.76 per cent.
  • Training and Enterprise Councils 13 per cent.
  • The figures for all three organisations are from their accounts.
  • The three figures are not comparable because of differences in responsibilities between the TECs, the HEFCE and the FEFC.
  • Specifically, the figure for TECs is much higher than either of the others because TECs are themselves directly involved in local business support and economic development.
