Mr. Ruane

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he will make a statement on the use of funding by Welsh schools under the Schools Access Initiative. [63827]

Mr. Hain

Returns from local authorities relating to the Schools Access Initiative indicate that funding was used for a variety of measures including ramps, alterations to doorways, toilets with access for disabled, extra sinks and shower facilities, white lines on steps and stairs and lift installations.

Mr. Ruane

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what records his Department has kept of the use of the £500,000 per year granted to Welsh schools under the Schools Access Initiative. [63829]

Mr. Hain

Local authorities were asked to provide reports detailing what measures had been implemented under the Initiative. 9 local authorities reported in 1997.

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales if he intends to audit the use of the £500,000 per year granted to Welsh schools under the Schools Access Initiative. [63828]

Mr. Hain

Local authority expenditure is subject to audit by Audit Commission appointed auditors. No separate arrangements are made for reporting to the Welsh Office.
