HC Deb 14 December 1998 vol 322 c404W
Mrs. Gillan

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations he has made to the Egyptian Government concerning the persecution of Coptic Christians in Egypt. [63815]

Mr. Fatchett

The British Embassy in Cairo closely follow human rights issues, including those related to freedom of religion. They assess that there is no general Egyptian Government policy of discrimination against Christians—a view shared by many leading Copts in Egypt who do not encourage diplomatic intervention in their problems.

We will continue to stay in touch with the Coptic Church and to monitor the situation.
