HC Deb 02 December 1998 vol 321 cc171-2W
Mr. Malcolm Bruce

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what plans he has to seek to co-ordinate savings and corporate taxation across European Union nations; and if he will make a statement. [61071]

Dawn Primarolo

[holding answer 30 November 1998]: The UK is taking an active part in discussions on the draft Directive on taxation of savings, but we have made it clear that we will not agree to any course of action which would seriously damage the UK and other European financial markets. There are no proposals for the coordination of corporate taxation in the European Union.

Mr. Malcolm Bruce

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if it is his policy to promote an OECD-wide approach to tax policy co-ordination; and if he will make a statement. [61072]

Dawn Primarolo

[holding answer 30 November 1998]: The UK takes an active part in the work of the OECD which is consistent with our aims of promoting economic growth through the development of international trade and investment.
