Since the launch of the Self Assessment public information programme in June 1995 about £21 million has been spent informing taxpayers of changes. Within this expenditure, £718,000 has been spent on public opinion research, £13 million on television, radio and newspaper advertising and £750,000 on direct mail. All these figures are exclusive of VAT and are costs to date (30 November 1998).
