To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what was the average cost in(a) the 1996–97 financial year and (b) the 1997–98 financial year of members of (i) the Territorial Army and (ii) the regulars. [39633]

The information requested is as follows.

The capitation rates show the average cost of Army personnel. They include all pay, allowances, earnings-related national insurance contributions and benefits, as well as allowances for support, accommodation, individual training and higher formation costs.
