To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list, for each healthcare trust in the North West Region,(a) the number of healthcare assistants employed by that trust and (b) the percentage of the total workforce which that figure represents.[39977]

The table gives the number of healthcare assistants employed in each trust within the North West region, and the per cent. represented in each trust by this group of staff. These figures are based on the Department's medical and dental and non-medical workforce censuses as at 30 September 1996.

Health care assistants (HCAs) are defined as support staff who are trained, or who are undertaking training, in the various competencies related to their job through National Vocational Qualification or other local HCA training. The figures in the table exclude staff acting as unqualified nurses or therapy helpers or assistants.
