HC Deb 28 April 1998 vol 311 c115W
22. Mr. Canavan

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what measures he is taking to reduce the incidence of tobacco-related illnesses and deaths. [38696]

Ms Jowell

The Government's comprehensive strategy to reduce smoking and smoking related deaths will be set out in the Tobacco Control White Paper to be published later this year.

In 1998/99, the Government are funding a £1 million teenage anti-smoking promotion campaign called "Respect", and a Health Education Authority adult smoking education campaign costing £5.5 million. As part of the campaign, £700,000 is being given to Quit to operate the Quitline—a telephone helpline—which offers smoking cessation advice, counselling and support.

In addition, a wide range of health professionals, notably general practitioners, routinely offer cessation advice and support.

35. Mrs. Humble

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what support the Government are giving to the Quitline smoking cessation helpline. [38709]

Ms Jowell

In 1998–99, Quit will receive £700,000 under contract from the Health Education Authority to run the smoking cessation helpline. This funding is made available from the Government's smoking education budget of £5.5 million.

On 24 April Quitline celebrated the 1 millionth call to its helpline at an event I attended.
