§ Ms JowellThe Government's comprehensive strategy to reduce smoking and smoking related deaths will be set out in the Tobacco Control White Paper to be published later this year.
In 1998/99, the Government are funding a £1 million teenage anti-smoking promotion campaign called "Respect", and a Health Education Authority adult smoking education campaign costing £5.5 million. As part of the campaign, £700,000 is being given to Quit to operate the Quitline—a telephone helpline—which offers smoking cessation advice, counselling and support.
In addition, a wide range of health professionals, notably general practitioners, routinely offer cessation advice and support.
§ 35. Mrs. HumbleTo ask the Secretary of State for Health what support the Government are giving to the Quitline smoking cessation helpline. [38709]
§ Ms JowellIn 1998–99, Quit will receive £700,000 under contract from the Health Education Authority to run the smoking cessation helpline. This funding is made available from the Government's smoking education budget of £5.5 million.
On 24 April Quitline celebrated the 1 millionth call to its helpline at an event I attended.
